Welcome to BaycolLawyers.com. This website
is designed to present important information about the prescription
drug, Baycol, (also known as Cerivastatin and Lipobay) manufactured
by Bayer A.G. Pharmaceutical. It includes information about the
side effects associated with Baycol, the withdrawal of the drug
from Untied States markets, and the litigation that has arisen due
to those side effects.
Baycol belongs to the statin class of prescription drugs, designed
to lower cholesterol by blocking enzymes that are essential to the
production of cholesterol in the body. Statin drugs such as Baycol
have been known to effectively reduce cholesterol levels and therefore
reduce the chances of a patient suffering a heart attack.
Unfortunately, statin drugs have also been known to cause muscle
cell damage. Occasionally, it can lead to Rhabdomyolysis, which
is a rare muscle condition that can cause kidney failure. The occurrence
of Rhabdomyolysis is ten times more frequent with Baycol then with
other statins. Dozens of deaths have even been attributed to the
use of Baycol. Combining Baycol with gemfibrozil, a drug that lowers
triglyceride levels, further increases the risks involved.
Bayer voluntarily recalled Baycol on August 8, 2001 as a result
of 31 deaths linked to the drug. By now Baycol has been associated
with at least 100 deaths since its introduction to the market. Thousands
of people who were prescribed the drug now suffer from Rhabdomyolysis
and other serious side effects.
If you have taken Baycol, consult with a physician and see about
replacing it with another cholesterol-reducing drug. You may also
want a check-up to see if you are suffering any side effects from
use of the drug.
